These terms apply to the NIA CHESS application ("the app") and the website niachess.com ("the site"), provided by NIA CHESS ("we", "us"). By installing or using the app you agree to these terms. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must agree on your behalf.
NIA CHESS is an offline chess training app for players of all ages. It is free to download, and a single one-time in-app purchase (US $19.99 or the local equivalent) unlocks all features permanently on that device for every profile. The purchase is made through the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. Purchases, refunds and billing are handled by those stores under their own terms.
We grant you a personal, non-transferable licence to install and use the app on devices you own or control, for private, non-commercial use. You may not copy, modify, sell, rent, reverse-engineer or redistribute the app or its content (lessons, videos, voices, artwork, puzzle and game collections) except where the law allows.
The app includes the open-source Stockfish chess engine (GPL) and puzzle and game data derived from openly licensed collections; their licences are included in the app. The app can connect to Lichess (lichess.org) if you sign in. Lichess is a separate service with its own terms and privacy policy; games played there are subject to Lichess's rules, including its minimum-age rules. The app may also connect to Chess.com through its official sign-in; Chess.com's user agreement and privacy policy apply there in the same way. We are not responsible for Lichess, Chess.com or for other players on them. Chess.com, ChessKid and Lichess are trademarks of their respective owners; NIA CHESS is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by any of them.
The app is suitable for all ages and is designed so a child can use it safely. Online play through Lichess or Chess.com must be set up by a parent or guardian. The app shows other players only as a rating and a country flag and includes no chat with other people.
Games, ratings, puzzle progress and profiles created in the app belong to you and stay on your device (see the Privacy Policy). If you delete the app, this data is deleted with it unless you have made a backup.
The app is provided "as is". We work hard to make it accurate and reliable, but chess analysis, ratings and coaching advice are generated automatically and may contain mistakes. To the extent permitted by law we exclude all warranties and are not liable for indirect or consequential loss. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have as a consumer under local law.
We may update the app and these terms. Material changes will be shown in the app or on this page with a new "last updated" date. Continued use after a change means you accept it.
